I've listened to this at least five times today. It came up in the Songza playlist of "Reddit's 100 Most Beautiful Songs". My sister played one of Italian composer Ludovico Einaudi's songs at her wedding last year, though I can't quite recall if this was one of them. P&G even used it during a commercial during last year's London Olympics.
It's strings and piano. That's it. And I will say without reservation that it is one of the most beautiful and moving pieces of music I have ever heard. I was at work, this song came up, and I was simply overwhelmed by the beauty for the full seven minutes. It honestly brought tears to my eyes.
The unresolved ending leaves much to the imagination, and the emotional power of this song reminds you, at least for a short while, that humanity is capable of truly wonderful things.

Sarah Brightman - Free
Sarah Brightman might be the most talented vocalist alive. She is an accomplished opera singer yet also capable of a more "popular" sound.
From the album Harem, "Free" is an ethereal, beautiful song, though it does end a little abruptly. It lies more in the popular realm than in the musical/opera genre she is more well-known for. Be sure to listen for the violin.
It's a little hard to think critically about this song, because it's just so captivating. The story it tells is one of human nature - wanting something other than what you've got.

Sophie B. Hawkins - Before I Walk On Fire
I guess I am into hot songs this week. This one could easily follow Tuesday's recommendation in a playlist.
From her debut album Tongues and Tails, this track from Sophie B. Hawkins includes, in addition to her wonderful voice, a tambourine (a common fixture in Sophie's songs) and the cello, which she herself plays on her more recent albums.
Her songwriting and singing exude passion and her own flavour of independence. Speaking of independence, she's not currently signed to a record label, having released her two most recent albums on her own.
If you happen to purchase the CD, be sure not to miss the photographs in the liner notes.
By the way, I plan to write these on Saturdays and Tuesdays from now on.
